Community-engaged environmental research
Undergrad students looking for a Master's program,
Consider applying to the NSF-funded master’s degree program known as ICARE – Interdisciplinary Consortium for Applied Research in the Environment. The main goals of the program are broadening participation in the environmental workforce and community-engaged environmental research in and around Baltimore Harbor. We will be welcoming our first cohort of students in Fall 2021.
Graduate students in our program will follow a two-year schedule that includes a series of professional and disciplinary courses, plus a research project that will comprise their master’s thesis. For the research project, students will be mentored by a team that includes at least one faculty member and one partner practitioner working on projects related to Baltimore Harbor and surrounding environments.
Student Benefits Include:
- $34,000 annual stipend, full tuition coverage & health insurance (6 students per year).
- Up to $7,500 in research expenses.
- Mentoring and networking with potential employers across the environmental sector.
Students should apply to any of the five main departments at UMBC affiliated with the program: Biological Sciences; Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering; Geography and Environmental Systems; Public Policy, or Marine Biotechnology. They should also complete a short application to the ICARE program. For best consideration, apply by January 1st.
