Professor Emeritus John Kloetzel publishes paper

Continuing a seven decade career

Professor Emeritus John Kloetzel publishes paper, continuing a career of publishing at least once in the last seven decades! His first paper was published in 1969.

The new article brings back several Kloetzel lab alumni and collaborators for one final paper—what Dr. Kloetzel calls his “pandemic paper,” after being able to devote so much time to it after the COVID shutdown. He noted that recent scientific findings allowed the team to gain a new perspective on and give new meaning to previously unpublished data.

After retiring from UMBC in 2007, Dr. Kloetzel moved to Oregon where he spends his free time teaching seniors about cell and molecular biology through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Southern Oregon University.

His paper:
Kloetzel JA, Aubusson-Fleury A, Butler MD, Banerjee D, Mozzicafreddo M. Sequence and Properties of Cagein, a Coiled-Coil Scaffold Protein Linking Basal Bodies in the Polykinetids of the Ciliate Euplotes aediculatus. J Eukaryot Microbiol. 2021 May;68(3):e12850. doi: 10.1111/jeu.12850. Epub 2021 Apr 15. PMID: 33738894.

EDIT: A previous version of this post mistakenly identified this article as Dr. Kloetzel's 69th paper. This number was meant to reference Dr. Kloetzel's first paper being published in 1969.
