Research and internship opportunities

It is time to plan for Summer 2021

UMBC CIRCUIT Program
UMBC is holding two information sessions (Dec 21st and Jan 6th) for students interested in participating in the
CIRCUIT program, which provides year-long, cohort-based research experiences for undergraduates. Students receive training, full-time summer salaries, and academic credit for part-time work during the school year.

CIRCUIT is led and funded by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab (JHU/APL) with UMBC as a participating institution.

Zoom links will be emailed to people who RSVP to the Dec 21st and Jan 6th myUMBC events shortly before they begin.

Technical areas for the team projects in the 2021-2020 cohort are likely to include:
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Data Science
  • Cybersecurity
  • Precision Medicine
  • Planetary Exploration
  • Environmental Science
  • Neuroscience
  • Material Science
  • Biological Science

Database for Summer Research Programs

Research experiences for undergraduates (REUs, also known as SURPs or SURFs) are paid summer internships, usually for 6-8 weeks (sometimes including housing) at research institutions. Undergraduates are paired with a lab and gain valuable research experience. These are extremely helpful for obtaining post-graduate jobs in STEM and applying to graduate or professional schools.

Our database contains more than 450 SURP programs. We encourage you to use the drop down menus below (in different combinations, if necessary!) to help you find a program that is right for you.

Harvard Medical School, Department of Systems Biology
Undergraduate Summer Internship (Summer 2021)

The Undergraduate Summer Internship is our headline program for bringing new minds into our scientific community. Each year, we recruit a vibrant cohort of undergraduates with a passion for science and a curiosity about what doing a PhD or MD/PhD might look like. Interns are paid $5000 to work in labs at Harvard's Quantitative Biology Initiative and the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School for 10 weeks (June 7th – August 13th). Interns learn together as a cohort through interactive journal clubs, and workshops, and participate in Harvard seminars and activities.

Participants in our summer program can expect to emerge with: (i) increased confidence in scientific research, writing, and communication; (ii) increased awareness of the research opportunities and career paths a biology PhD offers; and (iii) connections with the Harvard faculty, students, and researchers who make our university great. Participants will also gain a group of peers who are also embarking on an exciting adventure into higher education in science and medicine.

The CLIMB UP undergraduate summer research internship (paid)
University at Buffalo
Summer 2021

The CLIMB (Collaborative Learning and Integrated Mentoring in the Biosciences) Program at UB has created CLIMB UP for Summer Research, an outstanding summer research experience for undergraduate students to excel in biomedical, STEM, and health science research and explore career opportunities. Now entering its 12th summer, the overall goal is to introduce you to research opportunities, facilitate understanding of recent advances in the STEM disciplines, and mentor you towards graduate and professional careers. As a CLIMB UP Fellow, you will be guided through novel and exciting research projects and mentored by faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows through the summer and beyond. You will spend 10 weeks in the laboratory of your research mentor, whom you will be paired with based on your interests. We will train you in various areas necessary to safely and efficiently perform your research and related activities.
